Taupo's Volcanic Secrets

This display focuses on the numerous powerful volcanic eruptions which have shaped the caldera volcano now filled by Lake Taupo. Learn more about the famous AD 186 event, known simply as the Taupo eruption, which is responsible for much of the pumice found in the area today.

Become an armchair tramper and on computer explore the famous day walk, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. This virtual field trip, with 360 images, notes, maps and diagrams, highlights the fascinating geology of a beautiful part of Tongariro National Park.
